Can a Christian be TOTALLY free from sin?
This
is a teaching I have desired to take for a long time now. I have prayed and
studied for the Holy Spirit's illumination on this matter.
It is
long, don't go further if you are busy, I won't like you to to read it in a
hurry.
When you
are ready, kindly get a seat and your Bible as we dine at the Lord's
table.

Now, I
will fully answer the question that many people have asked me, which is: Can a
Christian be TOTALLY free from sin?
My firm
and humble answer is, YES!
I have
said it and I am going to say it again that the Spirit of God in a Christian is
the antidote to sin.
What does
that mean?
Gently
follow on as I take you through the Scriptures:
The
moment you confess faith in the death and resurrection of Christ, you become
saved... Born again!
The Bible
says in John 1:12, "As many as receives Him, He gives them power to become
the sons of God."
Praise
God!
To be
born again is very simple; repent from your sins and acknowledge what Christ
has done for you on the cross by accepting Him as your Lord and Saviour.
Having
done that, you are born again!
It is
both a miracle and a mystery!
And like
I used to say, a Born again Christian is not a polished or improved sinner. A
born again Christian is a brand new creature. Yes, BRAND NEW!
The Bible
says in 2 Corinthians 5:17, "If anyone, (yes, if ANYONE) be in Christ,
such person is a NEW CREATURE, old things have passed away and everything has
become new.
Hallelujah!
Once you
are born again, every sin you have ever committed is washed and forgiven... As
far as God is concerned, NOT a trace of your past sins will forever be
remembered.
Amen!
However,
there's something very important you need to know!
When you
become born again, you didn't get taller or shorter, fatter or slimmer... Yes
you are born again... But your body, your stature, your skin and hair color,
remain the same!
Keep calm;
you will understand what I am driving at in a moment!
Several
people, shortly after being born again, find themselves committing the sin they
have repented of, and then they wonder what the problem is.
See the
Truth of the word of God in 1John 3:8, "Whosoever is born of God does not
commit sin..." Yes, it is unnatural and very strange for a Christian to
commit sin.
Don't
give up on me yet, follow on!
Yes, at
salvation, you become a NEW CREATURE, a New Man... There's a regeneration of
your inner man, from Old to New.
Your
inner man was re-created from being an Old Man of sin to a new man of
righteousness.
But don't
forget, the same BODY is the house for both the Old man that has been destroyed
and the New Man that is just created.
When you
were a sinner, the old man used your BODY as an instrument of unrighteousness
and for sin.
Now that
the occupant of your body has changed, the Bible says in Romans 12:1, "I
beseech you therefore BRETHREN, to present your BODY, a living sacrifice, holy
and acceptable..."
Did you
notice the emphasis I placed on the word, "Brethren"?
Hold on,
I'm not done yet!
Romans
6:19 says,
"... for as ye have yielded your members (your BODY) servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so NOW yield your MEMBERS (your BODY) servants to righteousness unto holiness."
"... for as ye have yielded your members (your BODY) servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so NOW yield your MEMBERS (your BODY) servants to righteousness unto holiness."
Did you
also notice from that verse; it is the same BODY that was yielded to
uncleanness and iniquity that must be yielded to righteousness unto holiness?
Now you
understand that if a born again Christian does not WILLINGLY yield his/her body
as instruments of righteousness, in no time such person will not be different
from a sinner.
Let me go
a little further, I will conclude this teaching with a few verses from Romans
chapter 8.
See
this!
Romans 8:9 say, "But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His."
Romans 8:9 say, "But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His."
If you
are born again, the Spirit of Christ dwell in you, therefore you are no longer
under the influence of the old man.
Without
the Spirit of God in our lives, we are not in any way different from every
other sinner.
Verse 11
of Romans 8 will blow your mind:
"But
if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that
raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your MORTAL BODIES by His
SPIRIT that dwelleth in you."
Oh my
God!
It is the
Holy Spirit in us that will give life unto our bodies because it is already
dead to sin.
So again
I say, “The antidote to sin is Holy Ghost living in the heart of a
Believer".
Verse 13
is where I am heading to and I am there right now!
"For
if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do
mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live."
You see,
when you were a sinner, your old man used your body to fulfill its lust, and
its pride. It used your body to tell lies and keep malice... It used your body
to do all forms of atrocities.
Now you
are born again, the old man is gone, the new man is here, but occupying the
same body.
It is
your duty now to put your body in check (mortify) through the Spirit who now
lives within you.
If you
allow your body to take the lead, remember that all that your body knows how to
do is what it learnt from the old man.
Therefore,
as you MORTIFY your body through the Spirit, you will begin to train your body
to do righteous and holy things.
Through
the help of the Holy Spirit, you will begin to teach your BODY how to pray and
read the Scripture.
As you
continually yield yourself to the Spirit of God, He will continually call your
attention to any lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh and prides of life.
Apostle
Paul said, in 1Corithians 9:27 that he kept his body under control.
It's not
any different today; we must mortify the deeds of the body through the help of
the Spirit.
Hallelujah!
I hope
this helps someone!

God bless
you.
